With the pandemic starting to wind-down around the world, there are many lessons learned that have no doubt re-defined what a Smart City truly is. There are some cities that have actually become more equitable and were able to deal with these challenges head-on. Others have seen these current issues exacerbated by rising costs of living, climate change and much more. Despite these challenges, crime is becoming an increasing problem for municipalities around the world.
Crime rates & policing
Over two-thirds of the 40 most populous cities in the US experienced higher rates of homicide in 2021 compared with the year prior. According to CNN, it has reached record highs. Violent crimes have seen an uptick in Los Angeles, increasing by about 3.9% when compared to 2020. Some advocate for increased police presence and spending, while some, in stark contrast, want to defund the police. Regardless of your view, smart technologies can and should be leveraged to help combat crime.
How can Smartpolis help?
Smartpolis was built to ensure the efficiency and safety of municipalities. With its in-depth reporting app, citizens are able to report crimes and/or disturbances right away through our application. With emergency reporting, each request is automatically processed and dispatched to the appropriate team. In addition, Smartpolis’s news and alerting features can help citizens safely navigate their city while keeping them in the loop. Smartpolis is constantly working with local governments to create new features and bolster the ones we have already created. Although not a total solution, leveraging systems like Smartpolis is a step in the right direction when it comes to reducing crime and disturbances.
