Thailand is constructing a new smart city which will be known as the “Silicon Beach” of Asia. Ban Chang is connected to a motorway linking the cities of Pattaya and Bangkok, the two largest cities in Thailand, making it the perfect spot to leverage 5G technologies. In addition, this will be the first smart city in Thailand to deploy private 5G based on open RAN infrastructure. Ban Chang has collaborated with state-owned National Telecommunications (NT) and a local firm 5GCT, a network software supplier Mavenir, and Cisco Systems (Thailand) to kick start this program.
The goal is to connect people, communities, government services, and private sector services through local government data. Combining this with new data acquired through the Internet of Things (IoT), sensors, drones, and externally collected data, which can now be thoroughly analyzed for proper city management and better infrastructure.
Industrial robotics, factory automation, remote telemedicine, aviation, logistics, and agriculture are among the 5G use cases that Ban Chang is well-suited for. This pilot project ensures that the host of a smart city can create a single, secure communications network to support all needs. Not only that, but these can be easily deployed and managed from end-to-end visibility, ranging from smart kiosks and outdoor wi-fi to smart street lighting, parking, waste, and more.
